A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
